The announcement made by the presidents of Cuba and United States, concerning the beginning of normalization of diplomatic relations between both states, is historical and important. It is important for the people in the both countries, as well as for the whole world. This historical event sends a sign of willingness for respect and coexistence between the two countries and an ending of an era of polarization and suspiciousness. Sustainable peace all around the world requires dialogue and common solutions, rather than hostility.
In a year marked by violence in various parts of the world and military incursions on societies who claim self-determination and sovereignty, the approach between the United States and Cuba means not only a concrete possibility to overcome the current state in bilateral relations between the two countries, but is also a powerful sign that a global society in harmonious coexistence is possible if there is political will. This is, in summary, a victory in the struggle for peace and democracy all around the world.
In this context, the International Union of Socialist Youth salutes the decision taken by the both governments. The decision highlights the historical significance of cooperation for peace and democracy. Furthermore, IUSY expresses its hope for this to be the beginning of a path of progress, development and more democracy for Cuban people.
