ON THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE BEIRUT PORT EXPLOSION IUSY URGES FOR AN INTERNATIONAL INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION

It’s been 2 years since one of the world’s largest ever non-nuclear explosions ripped through Lebanon’s capital, killing more than 200 people, including at the port and further afield, with some 6,500 injured, 300,000 people had been made temporarily homeless; entire neighbourhoods of the Lebanese capital were devastated. Based on an analysis of videos, a team from the University of Sheffield estimated that the explosion was the equivalent of 1,000 to 1,500 tonnes of TNT – about a 10th of the intensity of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

Judge Tarek Bitar, is a Lebanese judge and the head of Beirut’s criminal court, is the second judge investigating the devastating Beirut port explosion. Because of the political affiliations, interference in the judicial system, and lack of accountability, Lebanon was never able to reach to peace and justice regarding any case, not only the catastrophic Beirut port explosion. Meanwhile, the investigation into the causes of the explosion has been held up for months due to political interference. Therefore, we demand to take this investigation into another level away from the Lebanese judicial system.

The tragedy continues to bring back severe memories to the Lebanese people. A section of Beirut’s massive port grain silos, shredded in the 2020 explosion, collapsed in a huge cloud of dust on Sunday after a weekslong fire, triggered by grains that had fermented and ignited in the summer heat. The northern block of the silos collapsed after what sounded like an explosion, kicking up thick gray dust that enveloped the iconic structure and the port next to a residential area. It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured.

The International Union of Socialist Youth strongly condemns the Lebanese authorities that promised a swift investigation; and instead they have brazenly blocked and stalled justice at every turn, despite a tireless campaign for justice and criminal accountability by survivors and families of victims.

IUSY calls to immediately end the violence against the Lebanese people and bring justice to the martyr’s families. IUSY calls on the United Nations to act decisively and urges for the establishment of an International and independent investigation to this act and enforce the rule of law in Lebanon.

Following up to this statement we will be launching our petition in the next couple of days to push for an international independent investigation on the second anniversary of the Beirut port explosion.

IUSY calls on all the sides involved to continue the political processes in a peaceful manner and in accordance with law.

IUSY values the commitment of basic human rights, dignity and freedoms. Democracy, the rule of law and justice must be defended at all times.

IUSY Statement on the Occasion of International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

      On 2 December 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted an annual observance that 29 November is the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people. The international community recognized that the historical injustice inflicted on our people by the resolution on the partition of Palestine 181 (II), 30 years ago, must be ended, and the Palestinian people must be able to achieve their independence. Today, the political, legal, and moral basis for adopting the international day of solidarity persists. This is an additional incentive for the international system to exercise and assume its role and commitment to enable our people to live freely and exercise their sovereignty in their own State. The  Palestinian people continue in their struggle to uphold their commitment to their land and inalienable rights through international legitimacy and its relevant resolutions, which recognized the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, welcomed the Declaration of Independence by the Palestine National Council, and recognized the occupied State of Palestine and granted it the status of non-member observer State in the UN General Assembly. In this context, IUSY continues its  relentless pursuit to achieve  the Palestinian national unity and hold elections, We will continue to address the international community to contribute to halting of Palestine and pressuring Israel, the occupying power, to comply with principles of international law and resolutions in this regard. We also affirm our full support to a serious political process through an international conference based on international legitimacy as it was addressed by President Abbas to the SC of the UN and resolutions to end the Israeli occupation of the occupied State of Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.” We call on the European Union countries and the international community, with their longstanding support for a just peace in middle east, to recognize the State of Palestine to save the political process and the two-state solution. The right wing Israeli government is racing against time to impose ‘a status quo’ on the ground to prevent the achievement of the independence of the State of Palestine. Hence, those who support the two-state solution must respond by creating a political reality that consolidates this solution through recognition of Palestine. IUSY also call on the newly elected U.S. administration to take the necessary measures to halt the catastrophic repercussions of the decisions and actions of Trump’s administration against Palestinian people, their land, and their rights.

      With all its organs and specialized agencies, we call on the United Nations to reaffirm the Palestinian people’s commitment to its Charter and resolutions. The victory of the international community to the Palestinian just cause, the national right to self-determination and the Palestinian right to independence on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, is a victory to the principles and values of the United Nations and the will of the free people of the world who want peace and justice to prevail.

Statement of IUSY Feminist Working Group’19: Gender Mainstreaming in Youth Organisations

Young activists of IUSY member organisations have met 27-30 June 2019, at Salvador Allende Haus in Germany to reflect on the theme Gender mainstreaming in youth organisations.

The IUSY Feminist Working Group has further discussed on women empowerment, intersectionality, representation and prevention of sexualized violence with a unique left perspective. We believe the fight against patriarchy must be the fight against all privileges and exploitations. Therefore, we have highlighted the difference from right and liberal feminism and have stressed for the need to:

  1. change the structure of society in order to achieve real equality. It’s not enough to cancel limitations;
  2. consider other struggles requiring attention and association with the needs in pursuing for gender equality;
  3. emphasise that the only feminism is intersectional feminism;
  4. analyse the reality through the lens of socialist intersectional feminism and to bring the left perspective to the centre of the table;
  5. have internal tools and common understanding of topics related to feminism in order to implement gender equality in the MO’s & in IUSY;

The Feminist Working Group has resolved to develop and publish a toolkit in December in order to inform, form and transform the knowledge.

No feminism without socialism, no socialism without feminism

Call for Registrations: Global Seminar 2019 3-6 October 2019

Overview

What:             IUSY Global Seminar

When:            3-6 October 2019

Where:           Stockholm, Sweden

Overview of the event

The Olof Palme International Centre’s Global Project finances the IUSY Global Seminar. The IUSY Global Seminar 2019 will gather together IUSY member organisations and representatives from the districts of the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League (SSU). New to this year is that the second day will be spent having a joint programme together with IFLRY, The International Federation of Liberal Youth. The aim of the seminar will be to provide to the Member Organisations and to the SSU representatives a platform to discuss and come up with ideas on how we can battle shrinking civil society space and support civil society organisations and activists across the globe. A secondary aim is also to strengthen collaboration with IFLRY on topics that we agree on. The seminar will be an opportunity for us to learn and reflect upon new ideas and partnerships in our work for a fairer and more equal world.

Theme

A cornerstone of a democratic society is an empowered and independent civil society. Civil society organiations (CSOs) are the voice of the people and ensure that decision-makers make policies that respond to the needs of its citizens. In the last couple of years civil society has been under attack. CIVICUS has documented that civil society space is attacked in 111 countries and that only four per cent of the world’s population live in countries where our fundamental civil society freedoms such as freedom of association, peaceful assembly and expression are respected. The shrinking space has presented itself as restrictive legislation, restricted access to funding for CSOs, and attacks such as threats, violence and murders have been committed to human rights defenders and civil society representatives and organisations. The Global Seminar will tackle the topic of shrinking civil society space and the role of political youth organisations. Together we will learn more about the attacks on civil society but also discuss what our roles are as political youth organisations in a more democratic world by ensuring that we have a free and independent civil society.

For more information about the state of civil society during 2018 read CIVICUS 2019 report.

For any questions or remarks please don’t hesitate to contact the IUSY Secretariat at iusy@iusy.org, put Global Seminar 2019 in the subject line.

We support the PASOK Youth demands for the release of two soldiers of Greece detented in Turkey

Greece - we demand the immidiate release of the 2 greek soldiers in Turkey

The aggressive rhetoric President Erdogan and the Leadership of Turkey have adopted in the past months against their neighbours, especially against Greece and Cyprus, constitutes an outrageous escalation of offensive behaviour that is not in accordance with the principle of good neighbourliness.

Furthermore, in the past few months, Turkey has increased the frequency of daily violations of the FIR of Greece, resorting to unacceptable actions in the Greek and Cypriot EEZ.

Recently, a Turkish patrol boat rammed a vessel off the coast guard of Greece, some nautical miles away of the Imia.

These actions demonstrate an escalating pattern of Turkish defiance of fundamental European and International treaties, as well as principles of the Rule of Law.

The imprisoning, on dubious and unfounded charges, of two Greek soldiers for more than 45 days in Turkey constitutes a climax of Turkish aggressiveness.

The Greek soldiers accidentally strayed across the borderline while routine patrolling, under poor weather conditions.

The established approach for relevant incidents, practised in the past by both Greece and Turkey, involved the on-site resolution of the issue between the local military authorities.

IUSY always support the peaceful resolution of all issues, following the established diplomatic ways and respect for International Law.

We unambiguously condemn the provocativeness of Turkish leadership and we demand the immediate release of two Soldiers of Greece.

IUSY and YES joint statement of solidarity with the people of Syria

Mediterranean - Syria

The International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) and Young European Socialists (YES) jointly address the military strike in Syria

We strongly condemn the use of chemical weapons by the government of Syria of last week and mourn the victims of such horrific attacks.

The situation of oppression of the Syrian people by its government has been lasting for far too long and led to one of the biggest humanitarian crises of the 21st century.

We call for urgent international humanitarian aid to the Syrian civilians and for an independent investigation from the UN on the use of chemical weapons in the area to be led.

IUSY and YES are deeply concerned by the possible escalation of the situation in Syria.

We regret the lack of alternatives to a violent intervention and we will always privilege interventions in respect of international law and within the United Nations Framework.

We condemn the lack of respect of international law and the disregard for internal democratic procedure in the intervention’s decision-making.

However, we recognize that the escalation of the situation is aggravated by the structural system of the UN decision-making process, which allowed Russia to veto a legal intervention.

We call for a structural reform of the process, allowing more efficient resolving of international conflicts and a better protection of civilians.

We call for the United Nations Security Council to retrieve influence on the situation and to organize in order to release the tension built up in the area and to start a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

We commonly call for an immediate cease-fire in the region from all parties involved and strive for the organization of democratic and transparent elections.

Both IUSY and YES call their respective national governments to respect the ban on weapon-selling in the region, and condemn all international actors that take part in the use of violence on the people of Syria by its government.
