IUSY & AUSY Seminar on “Road to Peace & Democracy: Moderation v/s Extremism”

Arab Union of Socialist Youth (AUSY) & International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) in cooperation with Olof Palme International Center and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, are glad and proud to invite you to The International Conference:

 “Road to Peace & Democracy: Moderation v/s Extremism”

13, 14, 15 February 2015

As young Socialists and Social Democrats, we believe in Freedom, Equality and Justice for all. Therefore, we believe that the threat represented by extremism and the brutality of IS- Islamic State (Daash) is an imminent danger to the world and the human values. Furthermore, it is a threat to diversity and pluralism in the Middle East throughout the brutal war waged by the terrorism against groups as Kurds (especially Yazidis) Christians and Shiites.

We assure our absolute support to the valiant Kurdish Peshmerga forces, which are fighting a war on behalf of the whole world. They have shown that they play a leading role to confront extremism, criminality and brutality practiced by the terrorist group IS.

The struggle for peace, democracy and freedom continues. The last weeks have shown that democratic forces can and will prevail, when the Kurdish forces managed to rescue Shangal and its people from the hand of IS.

The AUSY-IUSY international conference will be a high-profile platform for moderate political organizations, progressive youth leaders, and policy experts from Middle East, North Africa and the whole world in order to raise a call for peace and democracy.

If you have further questions or need support, please do not hesitate to contact us ausy@ausy.info- in the case of AUSY Members and iusy@iusy.org – in the case of IUSY Member Organisations.

With socialist regards,

Felipe Jeldres                  Evin Incir                                    Raed Bou Hamdan

IUSY Presidium Resolution #CharlieHebdo

As a IUSY Presidium, we are speechless and shocked about the attack against the editorial office of CHARLIE HEBDO in Paris on Wednesday 7, 2015. The attack left 12 people dead. As well, we are grieving for the victims during the hostage-taking at the Kosher grocery who were preparing for Shabbat. Our condolences are expressed to the families and friends of the victims.

The tragic occurrence at the editorial office of CHARLIE HEBDO was not only an attack on an editorial magazine. It was an attempt to weaken democracy and solidarity in society through aiming to attack the freedom of speech. We will never allow this to happen. The answer must therefor be more freedom and more democracy.

The attempt of the political right wing to exploit the violent incident in Paris leaves us angry and furious. Front National in France, as well as numerous other right-wing forces around the globe, seek to gain political capital out of this situation. They abuse the tragedy in Paris in order to justify their racist and islamophobic positions. With this behaviour the right-wing shows clearly that they have very much in common with the assassins: Both positions root in intolerance and hatred. As IUSY, we reject any hierarchisation of people, no matter whether if it is constructed with religion or origin, gender identity or sexual orientation.

Fundamentalism and extremism are always rooted in unjust circumstances people have to live their lives in. Their lost trust in a future in dignity. Only with fighting inequality, we can reach a future with mutual trust. Stigmatizing the Muslim community and excluding them from participation in society would only push, especially young people, into the hands of fundamentalists.

Whether in France, Syria or other parts of the world- in these days, our solidarity is with everyone suffering from religious fundamentalisms. We thus refuse all attempts to trivialize, exclude and villainize everyone of Muslim believe or the Muslim community as such. As a movement, we are working all around the world for an end of the spiral of exclusion and oppression, which is only strengthening religious fundamentalisms and therefor leading to attacks such as in Paris.

Our everyday work is about outlining an alternative vision of how we want to live together. Especially now, we have to oppose to all forces of oppression, religious fundamentalism and racism, through a strong vision of a future in equality. We will not be intimidated. We will stay even stronger together. All around the world and every day.

IUSY Supports the Reestablishment of Diplomatic Relations Between Cuba and the United States

The announcement made by the presidents of Cuba and United States, concerning the beginning of normalization of diplomatic relations between both states, is historical and important. It is important for the people in the both countries, as well as for the whole world. This historical event sends a sign of willingness for respect and coexistence between the two countries and an ending of an era of polarization and suspiciousness. Sustainable peace all around the world requires dialogue and common solutions, rather than hostility.

In a year marked by violence in various parts of the world and military incursions on societies who claim self-determination and sovereignty, the approach   between the United States and Cuba means not only a concrete possibility to overcome the current state in bilateral relations between the two countries, but is also a powerful sign that a global society in harmonious coexistence is possible if there is political will. This is, in summary, a victory in the struggle for peace and democracy all around the world.

In this context, the International Union of Socialist Youth salutes the decision taken by the both governments. The decision highlights the historical significance of cooperation for peace and democracy. Furthermore, IUSY expresses its hope for this to be the beginning of a path of progress, development and more democracy for Cuban people.

IUSY Asia Pacific Committee Meeting

One of the most urgent issues addressed was the Taliban’s Brutal Massacre of Pakistani School Children, which the meeting adopted a resolution on.

A Resolution by International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) Asia Pacific Committee Condemning the Taliban’s Brutal Massacre of Pakistani School Children

The Taliban massacre that killed at least 148 people, mostly children, at a military-run school in northwestern Pakistani city left a scene of heart-wrenching devastation, pools of blood and young lives snuffed out.

The attack at the Army Public School and College in the city of Peshawar on Tuesday was the deadliest slaughter of innocents in the country and horrified a nation already weary of unending terrorist assaults.

The currently convening IUSY-Asia Pacific Committee states that;

We believe in the dignity of human life and fights all forms of injustice and disrespect of human life and therefore is against all forms of terrorism especially those targetting innocent civilians including the youth;

We recognise the need to hold accountable, not only the Taliban, but also the Pakistani government for its perilous policy of aiding Taliban and other Taliban-like groups in an attempt to preserve its hold on political power;

Also recognise that the escalating tensions in the region is also a product of the United States’ attempt to establish military and economic hegemony in the area in tandem with its “pivot strategy” in Asia. Its unilateral drone strikes in Pakistan led by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) allegedly designed to target holdouts of the Taliban and other extremist groups has also resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties and only served as a recruitment tool for the different extremist and terrorist groups.

Now therefore, IUSY APC resolves that;

We join the Pakistani people in calling for justice and accountability for the victims of the massacre and stand in solidarity for Pakistan’s struggle for a free, democratic, open and peaceful society.

We condemn the barbaric act of the Taliban against innocent civilians, most of which were students, as well as the United State’s military excursions in the region which further escalates hostility and conflict.

We support a people-centered approach to real and meaningful regional peace and stability not anchored on narrow geo-political interests but on people’s genuine participation and empowerment.
